Lou is a mental catastrophe. The chaos of this mind can only be regulated by strict adherence to society’s conventions. Without school, the military, religion, politics, or a full-time paper route, Lou would lose control of his life, spin haywire, and run amok. He praises God for the structure society’s institutions have blessed him with, for at the helm of his own faculties, he knows he would certainly end up in a much less appealing institution, or worse, retired in the countryside as a philosopher.
